Vol. 396 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mature Student's Grant.

Brian Cowen

Question:

64 Mr. Cowen asked the Minister for Education if a mature student's grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Offaly.

The 1989-90 scheme for mature women students provides for the award of a "once-off" basis of 15 grants of £1,000 each to mature women who comply, inter alia, with the following conditions: be aged 25 years or over; be unwaged or on a low income; have completed successfully at least one year of an approved undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate course; have re-enrolled for the 1989-90 academic year; not be in receipt of a grant, scholarship or funding from any other source; and provide information on the financial circumstances of the household/individual.

The purpose of the scheme is to provide some financial help to women pursuing courses in areas where women have been traditionally under-represented — namely, industry, business, science and technology. Unfortunately, the candidate in question was not one of the successful applicants.
