Vol. 396 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cattle Feed.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

36 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the regulations or recommendations regarding feed per beast while cattle are confined on board ship either at port or at sea; the present position regarding bales of hay per day per beast; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Regulations provide that animals must be adequately fed and watered during transport, including any period awaiting loading and unloading. My Department estimates the daily requirement of feed at half a bale of hay per animal and ensures that fodder at that rate plus a margin to cater for unexpected delays is made available for the duration of a voyage. Exporters generally supplement the fodder with feeding nuts.
