Vol. 397 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hazardous Waste Regulations.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

99 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authorities which have complied with Article 4 of the EC (Toxic Waste and Dangerous Waste) Regulations, 1982 (details supplied) and which have prepared a special waste plan as requested by the article.

Nine local authorities have adopted special waste plans, as required under Article 4 of the European Communities (Toxic and Dangerous Waste) Regulations, 1982. My Department continues to urge the outstanding local authorities to finalise their plans.

It is envisaged that the Environmental Protection Agency will have a role in the implementation of the regulations on hazardous waste management. It is too early at this stage to specify the precise nature of its role in this area.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

100 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the number of prosecutions taken to date by each local authority in connection with the EC (Toxic and Dangerous Waste) Regulations, 1982.

The information requested is not available in my Department. Local authorities were asked some time ago to supply this information for the calendar year 1988 and are now being asked to supply data for 1989. This information will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as it has been made available to the Department.
