Vol. 397 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Improvement Grants.

Dick Spring

Question:

50 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide a special grant for road improvements from Gap Cross, Fossa, Killarney to Killorglin, County Kerry.

As the road in question is a regional road, responsibility for undertaking any works on it, including the provision of the necessary finance, is a matter for the local authority. The local authority may, at its discretion, use the discretionary grants for non-national roads paid by my Department to supplement expenditure from its own resources on such works. On 23 November 1989 discretionary grants for regional and county roads, totalling £3.023 million, were notified to Kerry County Council in respect of 1990.

Michael Noonan

Question:

151 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has from Limerick County Council to carry out improvements to a section of primary road (details supplied) in County Limerick; if his attention has been drawn to the frequency of serious accidents occurring on this roadway; when he expects to approve the proposals put to him by Limerick County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The development of proposals for the improvement of national primary routes is a matter, in the first instance, for the relevant local authority having regard to, inter alia, the accident record on the road.

There are proposals currently before my Department from Limerick County Council to undertake traffic management measures at Daly's Cross on the N7. These proposals are the subject of consultation at engineering level and I hope to be in a position shortly to approve them so that the work can commence. A road grant of £25,000 has been notified to the local authority to meet costs arising this year. The need for further work at this location will be considered when the effects of the proposed traffic management measures have been assessed.

There are no proposals before the Department in relation to road improvements at Lisnagry level crossing on the N7. However, the question of undertaking works at that location is the subject of discussions at engineering level between the Department and the local authority. On receipt of proposals in the Department the question of road grant funding will be considered.
