Vol. 397 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bord Glas.

Liam Kavanagh

Question:

25 Mr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the progress made and the plans drawn up by Bord Glas since its establishment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The progress made by the interim Bord Glas set up in April 1987 is referred to in the speeches made to the Dáil and Seanad during the Second Stages of the Bord Glas Bill, 1989. I would refer the Deputy to volume 392, No. 5, columns 1327 — 1341, of the Dáil Official Report of 2 November and to volume 123, No. 15, columns 1693 — 1705, of the Seanad Official Report of 7 February.

The statutory Bord Glas will shortly be appointed under the recently enacted Bord Glas Act, 1990. The plans which that board will put into operation are, of course, a matter for the board itself to decide. However, I have no doubt that the new board will be guided by the documents entitled A Programme for the Development of Horticulture and A Programme for the Development of the Seed Potato Industry published by the interim board and that it will regard the implementation of these programmes as one of its main tasks. As the Deputy is no doubt aware, these programmes envisage a combined domestic market share recovery and export expansion of some £60 million and the creation of 1,800 full-time and 1,500 part-time jobs.
