Vol. 397 No. 4

Written Answers. - CIE Tontine Society.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

31 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the progress which has been made regarding the investigation into alleged irregularities in the CIE Tontine Society; and if prosecutions are pending.

The Registrar of Friendly Societies, in December 1984, appointed inspectors under the Friendly Societies Act, 1896, to examine and report on the affairs of the Transport Employees Tontine and Benefit Society. The High Court, in June 1985, appointed an official liquidator to the society. The liquidation is continuing.

The inspectors have submitted reports to the registrar, who has referred these reports to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Any decision regarding possible prosecutions rests solely with the Director of Public Prosecutions. I have no function in this matter.
