Vol. 397 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waste Paper Recycling.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

49 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline the estimated capacity of Ireland's manufacturing industry for recycling waste paper; the tonnage of waste paper recycled for each of the last three years for which figures are available; whether he has any proposals in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed that the capacity of Ireland's manufacturing industry for recycling waste paper is in the region of 40,000 tonnes per annum. Precise figures for the amount actually recycled are not available. However, I understand that they would be relatively close to the capacity available.

The Industrial Development Authority, the State Agency which has statutory responsibility for the implementation of industrial development policy, has informed me that no grant assistance is available for the collection and baling of waste paper. I understand that my colleague, the Minister for the Environment has in place a grant support scheme to assist such projects.
