Vol. 397 No. 4

Written Answers. - Howth, Dublin, Sewerage.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

63 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Environment , in view of his recent statements concerning the dumping of raw sewage in Dublin Bay, when it is intended to provide a proper sewerage plant at the nose of Howth, Dublin 13, thus preventing all dumping of sewage at this outlet.

As announced in the environment action programme published in January 1990, the Government have decided to eliminate untreated discharges of sewage from major coastal towns and cities by the year 2000. The local authorities concerned have been asked to carry out an initial appraisal of the situation in their areas, on the basis of which a detailed programme will be prepared to end such discharges. The sewage outfall referred to by the Deputy will be considered in this context.
