Vol. 397 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prison Chaplains.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

78 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Justice whether any chaplains functioning in prisons or institutions which are funded out of his Department's Votes are paid any salary or stipend, either directly or indirectly out of moneys provided by his Department; if he will give an estimate of the number of such persons; and if he will give an estimate of the aggregate current annualised payroll or other cost to the State.

There are nine full-time and seven part-time chaplains attached to the prisons and places of detention. An additional chaplain, full-time, will be appointed shortly.

The total pay cost, including employers' PRSI, to the prisons vote in the current year is estimated at £171,500.
