An Post is statutorily required to provide a national postal service to meet the industrial, commercial, social and household needs of the State. The company is similarly required to ensure that its revenues are not less than sufficient to meet all charges properly chargeable to revenue account, to generate a reasonable proportion of capital needs and to remunerate capital and repay borrowings. The disappointing performance of An Post in 1989, involving a loss of £3.6 million, is a matter of serious concern. An Post is currently considering proposals designed to secure the long-term viability of the company.
