Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - An Post Programme.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

21 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Communications if a restructuring programme of An Post is planned, especially in light of the losses recorded during 1989; the form which this restructuring will take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An Post is statutorily required to provide a national postal service to meet the industrial, commercial, social and household needs of the State. The company is similarly required to ensure that its revenues are not less than sufficient to meet all charges properly chargeable to revenue account, to generate a reasonable proportion of capital needs and to remunerate capital and repay borrowings. The disappointing performance of An Post in 1989, involving a loss of £3.6 million, is a matter of serious concern. An Post is currently considering proposals designed to secure the long-term viability of the company.
