Vol. 397 No. 10

Written Answers. - Greyhound Industry Funding.

Michael Bell

Question:

68 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to give a financial allocation to the greyhound industry, with particular he will make a statement on the matter. of £3.5 million; if the industry will receive 50 per cent of this allocation; the purpose for which the finance is to be used; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As announced in the budget, the sum of £3.5 million to be provided in 1990 — and in each of the next three years — is intended to allow the Racing Board and Bord na gCon to accelerate investment programmes at courses and to enhance generally the attractiveness of and incentives for racing.

Of the £14 million to be made available over the four year period, £2 million has been allocated to Bord na gCon which have been invited to submit proposals for the use of the funds.

In addition, assistance for greyhound breeding has been included in the draft rural development programme which I have submitted for consideration to the EC Commission for EC Structural Funds support.
