Vol. 398 No. 1

Written Answers. - Representations to British Authorities.

John Bruton

Question:

86 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the cases of alleged or actual miscarriage of justice in British Courts or Northern Ireland Courts on which he has made representations to the United Kingdom authorities in the past year; and if the case of the Armagh Four had been included in such representations.

The Government closely monitor all such cases involving Irish nationals which have come before the courts in Britain. The same is true of cases which have come before the courts in Northern Ireland. Where appropriate, inquiries or representations have been addressed to the British authorities in relation to specific cases.

In relation to the case of the Armagh Four, I have had inquiries made about the case through the framework of the Anglo-Irish Conference and I have noted the Secretary of State's remarks in the House of Commons on 2 November 1989, that he will be happy to look at new evidence or new factors which might be put to him on this case.
