Vol. 398 No. 4

Written Answers. - Detention Centre Absconders.

Tony Gregory

Question:

140 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if she will arrange to have leave cancelled in respect of two youths from St. Joseph's (Detention Centre), Clonmel, County Tipperary; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Inquiries made by my Department have indicated that the youths in question were not on home leave from St. Joseph's Special School, Clonmel, County Tipperary when the recent instances of unauthorised taking of motor vehicles occurred; both in fact absconded from the school in recent weeks and to my knowledge have yet to be apprehended.

The question of having leave cancelled does not accordingly arise at this time in relation to these youths. Should the youths be found to have been implicated in the events referred by the Deputy, I have no doubt that the question of home leave in these cases would hardly arise.
