Vol. 398 No. 4

Written Answers. - Wind Energy.

Enda Kenny

Question:

98 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Energy if he will outline the Government's policy in relation to wind energy as a means of generating electricity; if any applications exist currently in his Department in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The generation of electricity from wind energy is encouraged by the Government provided it is economically viable and does not involve significant subsidisation by electricity consumers. This was essentially one of the conclusions of the Jakobsen Inquiry into electricity prices in Ireland which was carried out in 1984. There is currently in my Department one application for the establishment of a wind farm. This is being examined by my officials.
