Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers - Rathfarnham Castle.

Alan Shatter

Question:

14 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Finance whether it is intended to use Rathfarnham Castle for tourist purposes; and the Government's plans with regard to the future use of Rathfarnham Castle.

Alan Shatter

Question:

35 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Finance whether it is intended to demolish or maintain the north and south wings of Rathfarnham Castle; and the Government's plans with regard to the future use of the castle.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 14 and 35 together.

The Commissioners of Public Works originally proposed to demolish the north and south wings, to restore the castle and open it to the public. Dublin County Council, who own the north wing and some surrounding land, withheld their agreement to these proposals as they considered that it would be possible for them to formulate a joint proposal with Bord Fáilte for an appropriate use of the castle and two wings. This proposal has not yet been received by the Commissioners of Public Works.
