Vol. 398 No. 6

Written Answers. - Live Hare Coursing.

Tony Gregory

Question:

30 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Finance if the Wildlife Act, 1976 is under review at present; if he has received submissions regarding live hare coursing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Amendments to the Wildlife Act, 1976, are at present being prepared. I have received a submission regarding live hare coursing in the context of these amendments.

The powers conferred on me by the Wildlife Act, 1976, in relation to wildlife, including hares are designed to ensure the conservation of wild fauna and flora and their habitats.
In the case of hares, the Act also provides for the taking of these animals under licence for use at regulated coursing matches held in accordance with the rules for such matches pursuant to the Greyhound Industry Act, 1958. Coursing is regulated under that Act, not under the Wildlife Act.
There are no indications that the hare population, which is abundant, is decreasing.
