Vol. 398 No. 8
155 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health the cost of each public education programme undertaken by his Department during the years 1985 to 1989, inclusive; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Public education programmes funded by my Department encompasses a range of themes and are undertaken by statutory and voluntary bodies as well as by the health promotion unit of my Department which was established in 1988. Prior to the transfer of its function to the health promotion unit the Health Education Bureau was responsible for health education. In addition, health education programmes are operated by health boards within the functional area of individual boards which respond to local needs and priorities.
The information is not readily available in the format requested by the Deputy for the years 1985 to 1987 when the Health Education Bureau was responsible for health education but I have asked my Department to try to extract the relevant figures for the major programmes during those years and I will pass these on to the Deputy when they are available. The following is a breakdown of expenditure by the programme during the years 1988 and 1989.
