Vol. 398 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dublin Schools and Designation.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

164 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Education the reason St. Agnes's Primary School, Crumlin, Dublin 12 has not been awarded disadvantaged status for both grant aid and concessionary teachers, as the socio/economic make-up of the school is on par with other schools benefiting under these schemes; the criteria required and applied by her Department in order for St. Agnes's School to be categorised as a normal school.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

165 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if she will designate a school (details supplied) in Dublin 12, as disadvantaged in order that the school can have the benefit of additional facilities.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 164 and 165 together.

Concessionary posts have been allocated to schools with the greatest perceived needs. The selection for the allocation of posts has been made following consultation with the Department's inspectors who are familiar with the particular circumstances of the schools. The recommendations have taken into account the many educational, social and environmental factors affecting the schools.

A special working group was set up some time ago to review the criteria for identifying schools in disadvantaged areas. This group has now submitted a report which is being examined.

There are two separate schools, the infants school and the senior school. Both schools have been included with other schools seeking posts under the scheme and will be considered for inclusion if additional resources become available for the allocation of further posts.
