Vol. 398 No. 8

Written Answers. - Shannon Estuary Fish Farming.

Michael Finucane

Question:

82 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for the Marine if he has any plans to designate areas of the Shannon Estuary for fish farming; the areas which he intends to designate; and when such designation will occur.

I have no immediate plans to designate any areas of the Shannon Estuary for fish farming; the designation programme which my Department is working on at present identifies priority areas based on development potential and the level of interest from prospective developers.

There is an Oyster Fishery Order already in existence covering part of the estuary area and this permits its holder to engage in oyster cultivation. Experiments to date in relation to the cultivation of fin fish at certain locations in the estuary have not proved successful.
