Vol. 398 No. 10

Written Answers. - Mountmellick (County Laois) Community School.

Tom Enright

Question:

227 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the works to be carried out by her Department regarding the proposed Mountmellick community school at Mountmellick, County Laois; the type of works proposed; the additional new buildings, if any, being built; the number of new classrooms being built; the position regarding science laboratories, language laboratories, woodwork and metalwork rooms and home economic facilities; the proposals she has for the updating and extension of the library; if a new gymnasium will be provided and the full extent of sporting facilities to be provided for students at the school and for the people in the Mountmellick community and surrounding areas; when these works will be carried out; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

It is proposed to convert and renovate the convent buildings at Mountmellick to accommodate the proposed new community school there. No new buildings are required.

Arising from a recent review of the projected pupil numbers, it is necessary to revise the existing architectural plans. The accommodation to be provided for the revised pupil numbers will comprise a full range of facilities for the courses to be conducted in the new school. My Department has arranged a meeting with its design team to consider the revisions to be made.

I am not in a position at this stage to indicate precisely when building work will commence on the site but it is my intention to ensure that there is no undue delay with the project.
