Vol. 399 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - Educational Programme on Tree Planting.

Donal Carey

Question:

11 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Energy if he will undertake an educational programme in second level schools which would demonstrate the proper techniques for the planting of hardwoods; and if he will also set up a pilot scheme in the western counties.

While the content of the curriculum for second level schools is not a matter for my Department I would be prepared to develop an educational programme along the lines described with the Department of Education if that Department considered this to be appropriate. I will, therefore, consult with the Minister for Education on the matter.

Under the tree planting grant schemes operated by my Department free technical advice on silvicultural matters is already available. In conjunction with this advisory service, seminars are organised in association with Teagasc, for farmers and forestry groups and this service will be expanded shortly as part of the operational programme for rural development.

Will the Minister put forward a pilot programme which might gain acceptance from the Minister for Education much more quickly than a comprehensive one?

I said I would be prepared to consider the matter and I will have discussions with the Minister for Education about what form the programme should take. I am not in a position to indicate anything further at this stage.
