Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - Irish-trained Teachers in Britain.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

172 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education the number of Irish-trained primary teachers now working in schools in Britain; and the number of such teachers in respect of whom her Department have been asked to provide confirmation of qualifications to the Department of Education and Science in the United Kingdom or to local education authorities.

My Department would not be in a position to indicate the number of Irish-trained primary teachers who are now working in Britain; the Higher Education Authority's annual report "first Destination of Award Recipients in Higher Education" gives data only in relation to the position of graduates who respond to the survey conducted for the purposes of that report approximately nine months after graduation. The latest report indicates that 5.6 per cent of those who graduated in 1988 were teaching abroad. No additional statistics are available.
