Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - Maigue River (County Limerick) Works.

Michael Finucane

Question:

63 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works intends to carry out works on the Maigue River at the bridge in Croom, County Limerick, in order to prevent further flooding damage to private property.

The scheduled works of the Maigue catchment drainage scheme, which have been completed for some years now, have reduced significantly the incidence and duration of flooding in the Croom area. However, they cannot guarantee a total immunity to flooding to the area which was vulnerable to severe flooding, often of a prolonged nature, pre-drainage. Some flooding may therefore continue to occur especially in periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall.

The responsibilities of the Office of Public Works are now confined to a programme of maintenance of the completed scheme works which will include the continuous monitoring of the situation throughout the catchment.
