Vol. 399 No. 4

Written Answers. - Toxic Emissions from Generating Stations.

Richard Bruton

Question:

72 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Energy the number of generating stations and their rated capacity in which advanced burning techniques have been installed to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides; the cost of the investments involved; and the plans for extending such investment.

None of ESB's generating stations have as yet been fitted with nitrogen oxide scrubbing equipment. However, in order to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Sofia Protocol of the Geneva Convention on long range transboundary air pollution the ESB intend to install low-NOX reduction burners at their 900 MW coal burning station at Moneypoint. It is estimated that the cost to fit this equipment will be in the region of £6.5 million.
