Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - Child Deaths on Roads.

Alan Shatter

Question:

42 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Environment , in light of the fact that child deaths on Irish roads are among the highest in Europe, if he will launch a new road safety campaign along the lines of that proposed by the National Parents Council Primary Section.

The level of child road deaths in this country has to be viewed against the proportion of children in the total population. For example, while child deaths in this country in 1987 represented 9.7 per cent of all road deaths as against 8.2 per cent in the UK, children under 14 years comprise 28 per cent of the Irish population as against a comparable figure of some 20 per cent for the UK.

The National Safety Council, which have responsibility for road safety promotion, target children especially in their educational and advertising campaigns. In October next, the council will be promoting a special road safety campaign as part of a European-wide campaign.
