Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cattle Feed Imports.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

70 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the volume or estimated volume of meat, offal and/or bonemeal for cattle consumption which was imported into Ireland in 1989; the countries of origin; if meat, offal and bonemeal is manufactured in Ireland for consumption by cattle; and the estimated volume of such feed sold in Ireland.

Since July 1988 there has been a ban on the import of meat and bonemeal for animal feed from Great Britain. Since January 1989 a similar ban has applied to product from Northern Ireland. An estimated 18,000 tonnes of meat and bonemeal manufactured in Ireland was compounded into a total of 1.4 million tonnes of feedingstuffs sold for consumption by cattle in Ireland in 1989.
