Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - CERT Trainee Placement Programme.

Michael Creed

Question:

73 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Labour if his attention has been drawn to the current policy operated by CERT with regard to trainee placements; his views on whether this leads to discrimination in certain peripheral establishments; if he will request CERT to introduce a rota system whereby all hotels paying the CERT levy will eventually benefit from trainee placements; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The purpose of CERT's trainee placement programme is to provide supervised work experience relevant to course and certification requirements in establishments which meet minimum standards deemed necessary by CERT.

The current system is considered to be the most appropriate in ensuring the availability of highly skilled and qualified workers for the industry. A rota system along the lines suggested by the Deputy would not be in the best interests of the trainees and the industry.
