Vol. 399 No. 7

Written Answers. - Improper Presentation of Drugs.

Tony Gregory

Question:

33 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health the outcome of his Department's investigations into allegations that a number of general practitioners were making large quantities of heroin substitute known as Naps available to drug users; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I establish committees of inquiry into the improper prescribing by general practitioners when these are brought to my attention by the Garda authorities and the necessary information supplied to me. Presently I have established such a committee into one such case and propose to establish another such committee in relation to allegations of improper prescribing by another general practitioner in the near future. If the Deputy has information which would be of assistance to the Garda he should supply it to them as quickly as possible.

I hope that the Deputy will appreciate that any further comments by me in relation to these matters might be prejudicial to a fair outcome to the inquiries.
