Vol. 399 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Caherciveen (County Kerry) Community School.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

13 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the development of a new community school at Caherciveen, County Kerry; if a site has been purchased; and if the three management bodies involved have given their approval to the proposed site.

Following a full review of all aspects of the building project for the proposed community college at Caherciveen, I decided recently that the college should be built on a greenfield site. My Department has requested County Kerry VEC to submit its proposal on the location of the new community college. Their proposal is awaited.

County Kerry VEC are encountering problems at present due to the cost of prospective sites. If they agree to purchase a site in the near future will the Minister be prepared to advance the planning permission for this project as a matter of priority because of the need for a new school in Caherciveen?

I would be prepared to do that. I visited Caherciven because this issue had generated quite a lot of heat in County Kerry. I visited all the sites and told the people concerned that I had changed my decision. It was time to do something definite about this college. When the proposal on a site is submitted to me I will not delay in regard to the planning process.
