Vol. 399 No. 8

Written Answers. - Teacher Retirement Age.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

25 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Education her views on whether the anomaly whereby primary teachers can retire on pension at age 55 and secondary teachers cannot retire until age 60 is equitable; the action she proposed to take to rectify this anomaly; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The issue raised by the Deputy was included in claims from the teacher unions which were being discussed until very recently at the teachers' conciliation council. These discussions are not finalised. Also letters from the teachers unions to me and to the Minister for Finance concerning teachers pension schemes are being considered at present. In these circumstances it would be neither appropriate nor helpful for me to comment on the issue raised.
