Vol. 399 No. 8

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

61 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education the names and locations of the national schools to which she is appointing or has appointed 30 new remedial teachers; the number of further schools recommended by the school inspectorate for this service; and the basis on which the schools which have received the new posts were selected from the total recommended.

Sixty-six national schools throughout the country will benefit from the services of 30 additional remedial teaching posts which I sanctioned in the current school year.

In the primary school area where there are 3,247 national schools a remedial teaching service is provided to approximately 1,100 schools by some 880 remedial teachers. I intend keeping the appointment of further remedial teachers under review.

It would be a matter for individual boards of management to indicate whether they have the services of a remedial teacher.

When remedial posts are available my Department have regard to reports from their inspectorate on the needs of schools in their areas and posts are allocated on the basis of priority of need.
