Vol. 400 No. 2

Written Answers. - Harbour Dues.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

23 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine the reason harbour dues are not payable by Soviet, Nigerian and Bulgarian trawlers in the outer harbour in Castletownbere, County Cork; and if he will so provide for the future in order that the necessary funds may be provided for the removal of the Bardini Reefer wreck which could then be reimbursed out of harbour dues paid.

My Department are aware that factory ships operating from foreign ports are anchoring outside the present limits of the Castletownbere fishery harbour centre, thus legitimately avoiding payment of harbour dues. Proposals for the extension of the limits of the harbour are currently under examination. The question of the removal of the Bardini Reefer will be borne in mind in that context.
