Vol. 400 No. 3

Written Answers. - Artificial Insemination.

Jim Higgins

Question:

54 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has any plans to introduce a scheme to allow farmers use DIY artificial insemination; if he plans introducing the right to choice in respect of the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

DIY artificial insemination has been permitted in this country since 1984 under conditions specified by my Department. Some 1,100 people are currently licensed for this purpose. No restrictions are placed on licensees as regards choice of bulls and both domestic and imported semen is available at each AI station. I do not propose to change the present arrangements.
