Vol. 400 No. 6

Written Answers. - Border Security Cost.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

39 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, in view of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 173 of 19 June 1990, if he could estimate the likely reduction in the budget for his Department if Border security was not necessary; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I informed the Deputy in response to his question of 19 June 1990, the costs associated with Border security are not separately compiled. Accordingly, it is not possible to estimate the likely reduction in expenditure, in so far as the Votes administered by my Department are concerned, if Border security was not necessary. However, if the Deputy is seeking information regarding the estimated additional overall costs which arise in the Votes for which my Department has responsibility as a general consequence of the troubles in the North, I would refer him to my reply on 27 June 1990 to a question by Deputy Barry on this subject.
