Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Timber Industry Development.

Phil Hogan

Question:

30 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Energy the plans which are in train to develop the downstream potential of our forestry output; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am committed to the preparation of a comprehensive strategy for the development of the timber industry into the next century, in consultation with the various interests in the industry. EC support for this development is included in the Operational Forestry Programme which will be launched shortly.

Coillte Teoranta and the IDA are already co-operating in promoting the development of a competitively structured sawmill in industry capable of producing and marketing quality timber, and in discussions with potential investors in a third pulpwood plant to utilise increasing supplies of thinnings and sawmill residues.

Finally, a National Standard Recommendation SR11 for structural timber was introduced by EOLAS in 1989, based on research funded by my Department.
