Vol. 401 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Caretakers.

Ivor Callely

Question:

118 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the way in which she intends to deal with the situation where some schools are without a caretaker or a replacement caretaker due to absence on sick leave for a prolonged period.

My Department have notified vocational education committees of arrangements where substitute nonacademic staff may be temporarily employed in case of long-term illness. Similar provisions are being considered at present for community and comprehensive schools.

As secondary schools are privately managed institutions, the employment of non-academic staff is entirely a matter for the relevant school authorities.
