Vol. 401 No. 1

Written Answers. - Director of Public Prosecutions Office Staffing.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

44 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the number of staff in the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, giving a breakdown between professional and administrative; if he accepts that shortage of staff contributes to delay in bringing cases to trial, and that such delays cause considerable trauma and distress to victims of crime, particularly in cases involving rape and personal violence; and if he will take steps to provide the necessary additional staff required.

The number of staff in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is 16. The breakdown is six legal officers and eight administrative staff plus one messenger and one blind telephonist. I am advised by the DPP that there are no delays in his office arising from staff shortages.
