Vol. 401 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing Loans.

Ivan Yates

Question:

83 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties experienced by many young couples in obtaining local authority loans due to the very restrictive income limit of £10,000; if he has any proposals to increase the limit to £12,000 in view of the fact that it is difficult to sustain repayments on incomes less than this amount; and, if so, when; and in view of the fact that little local authority house construction is taking place and that commercial loans are not available to these couples, the proposals, if any, which he has to assist such people in obtaining their own houses.

I have no proposals at present to increase the income eligibility limit for local authority house purchase loans.

However, it is my intention to keep the question under review to ensure that suitable mortgage finance continues to be available to households wishing to purchase their own houses.
