Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Closure of Post Offices.

Dan Wallace

Question:

195 Mr. Wallace asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, in view of the recent controversies about closures of post offices, he is making alternative arrangements for the payment of old age and other pensions; if he is having discussions with An Post about possible closures; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An Post are aware of our concern regarding the impact that the closure of post offices can have on social welfare clients. Where post offices have closed, the pensioners affected have been fully advised and payment of their pension was transferred to other post offices nominated by them.

The question of closing post offices is a matter for An Post to decide having regard to various factors such as local circumstances and, ultimately, commercial viability.
