Vol. 402 No. 1

Written Answers. - Celbridge (County Kildare) Schools.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

305 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the facilities to be provided at St. Wolstan's Holy Faith School, Dublin Road, Celbridge, County Kildare; if finances are now available to have the proposals implemented; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The review referred to in my reply to the Deputy's previous question of 31 May 1990 regarding this school is continuing and discussions with the school authorities have yet to be concluded. In the circumstances, I am not in a position at present to provide the information sought by the Deputy.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

306 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if the appointment of an extra teacher is warranted at Ardclough national school, Ardclough, Straffan, County Kildare; the number of pupils attending the school at present and the number of teachers; whether the average pupil/teacher ratio is being maintained in the school at present; if she intends to approve the appointment of extra teaching staff in the near future; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The staffing of national schools is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with the agreement on staffing made between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery.

The authorised staffing of Ardclough national school for the 1990-91 school year is principal plus two assistants.

There were 100 pupils enrolled in the school on 30 September 1990.
My Department have examined the enrolment in the school. The school is not in breach of my Department's guidelines on maximum class sizes.
I regret to inform the Deputy that the appointment of an additional assistant to the school is not warranted.
