Vol. 402 No. 5

Written Answers. - General Medical Services Scheme.

Bernard Allen

Question:

170 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on reports that the cost of the General Medical Services scheme is expected to be £15 million over budget this year despite the introduction of the cost cutting capitation payment method and the new FICID Drugs Agreement; and if he will be making further allocations to the scheme so that it can operate at full efficiency for the remaining months of 1990.

My Department are in regular contact with the General Medical Services (Payments) Board and assessment of the board's financial position is ongoing. While expenditure will be somewhat in excess of budget, it is not possible, at this stage, to give a precise estimate of the amount involved. I am satisfied that sufficient funding will be available to the board to allow them to meet their financial obligations in the current year.
