Vol. 402 No. 5

Written Answers. - Expenditure by CIE.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

220 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the total public expenditure since 1980 on (1) resignalling (2) renewal of permanent way and (3) provision of new rolling stock to service each of the following routes (a) Dublin-Cork (b) Dublin-Galway (c) Dublin-Sligo and (d) Dublin-Belfast.

Since 1980 total expenditure by CIE on mainline rail signalling has amounted to £25 million. During the same period total investment on renewal of the permanent way throughout the entire rail network amounted to £109.7 million. Total investment on mainline rail rolling stock since 1980 has amounted to £57 million. As this rolling stock is used throughout the entire mainline rail network, all mainline routes have benefited from this investment.
