Vol. 402 No. 9

Written Answers. - Forestry Programmes.

Paul Bradford

Question:

24 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Energy if the planned modification of the Common Agricultural Policy will have any direct effect on forestry programmes.

Although the precise reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy necessitated by the current round of GATT negotiations have not yet emerged, I do not expect any adverse effects on forestry. The Community will remain a significant importer of timber. World trade in timber is not distorted by price subsidies or restrictions. Forestry is, therefore, an attractive alternative land use and, I expect, will continue to receive the high priority and generous aid set for it in the Community's forestry action programme adopted in June 1989.
