Vol. 403 No. 1

Written Answers. - McCarthy Castle, Kerry.

Dick Spring

Question:

99 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works have any proposal to carry out remedial works to McCarthy Castle on Ballinskelligs Bay, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ballinskelligs Castle is not in State care and, therefore, the Commissioners of Public Works are not empowered under the National Monuments Acts to incur expenditure on its maintenance or conservation.

The castle, which has been much altered and has no unusual features or elements, would not be considered suitable for taking into State care.
