Vol. 403 No. 3

Written Answers. - Lough Swilly (Donegal) Railway Company.

Michael Bell

Question:

87 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he has any plans to help save the service provided by the Lough Swilly Railway Company; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that his Department's inactive and inconclusive approach to this issue could result in the people of Donegal having no public transport of any kind.

I am aware of the problems of the Lough Swilly Railway Company. Representatives of the management and workforce of the company are in the process of devising a strategy for the survival and future development of the Lough Swilly Company and in that regard have been having discussions with officials of my Department.

I can assure the Deputy that my Department will be doing everything necessary to ensure the continuation of essential public transport services in Donegal.

I do not accept that my Department has been either inactive or inconclusive in dealing with this matter.
