Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authorities Revenue Deficits.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

184 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authorities currently running deficits; the inquiries which he has made regarding the nature and extent of such deficits; and the action, if any, he proposes to take in the matter.

While 48 local authorities had revenue deficits at the end of 1989, in most cases the deficits were offset by outstanding debtors.

The position is kept under review on the basis of quarterly returns submitted by each local authority and, where necessary, the local authorities concerned are encouraged to take appropriate remedial measures.
