Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Marking System.

Michael Ferris

Question:

90 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education the major findings of the report of the working party set up under the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment in relation to the marking of the leaving certificate; the changes she intends to introduce following the report; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The thrust of the report is that the marking system is basically sound. It does not favour strict normreferencing nor criterion-referencing. To quote:—"The development and refinement of the existing system which appears to be based on a combination of both approaches, offers the best way forward".

The observations and recommendations of the report are being taken into consideration in my Department.

I have already announced a new grading structure for 1992. Any other developments will be fully discussed with all interested parties.
