Vol. 403 No. 8

Written Answers. - Kinnitty (Offaly) Garda Strength.

Tom Enright

Question:

138 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí, including sergeants, attached to Kinnitty Garda station, Kinnitty, Birr, County Offaly, on 1 November 1970, 1 December 1980 and 1 December 1990; if his attention has been drawn to the increased level of crime in the Kinnitty area and to the necessity for increased Garda presence in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The assignment of gardaí to individual stations is a matter for the Garda authorities, who inform me that the strength of Kinnity station on 1 November 1970 and on 1 December in the years 1980 and 1990 was three, two and two, respectively. The Garda authorities also inform me that there are no indications of an increased level of crime in the Kinnitty area, that the current Garda strength at the station there is adequate to meet the policing needs of the area and that there are no proposals at present to assign additional gardaí to the station.
