Vol. 403 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dublin Waterways Development.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

33 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Finance the progress which has been made in preparing a comprehensive development plan for the Grand Canal; if he will outline the proposals for the development of the Grand Canal harbour basin in Ringsend, Dublin 4; the steps taken by him to secure the permanent involvement of local community interests in that development; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The report of a study of the Grand and Royal Canals and the Barrow Navigation by consultants commissioned by the Office of Public Works, which was published in February 1988, contains detailed recommendations for the development of those waterways as public amenities. Those recommendations on the basis of the programme of work are being undertaken according as resources permit.

An action strategy has been prepared by the Office of Public Works for the area of the Grand Canal basin under its control. This strategy has been prepared in consultation with Dublin Corporation, which have designated the area around the basin as a rejuvenation area. The proposals for development include the general improvement and upgrading of the area surrounding the basin in co-operation with Dublin Corporation and local interests. This work will commence shortly. A water-based interpretative centre for the canals to be sited in the basin is at an advanced stage of planning.

The Office of Public Works maintain close liaison with local community interests by participating in a representative group working for the development of the area and it is planned to continue this type of liaison.
