Vol. 403 No. 8

Written Answers. - Property Tax.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

38 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Finance if, in the light of the statements made by the Minister for Industry and Commerce to the policy conference of the Conference of Major Religious Superiors on 25 September 1990 regarding the possibility of a property tax, the Government have any plans to introduce a property tax; if he will specify the types or categories of property which will be subject to any such tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I take it that the Deputy is drawing a distinction between a comprehensive property tax, and existing measures, specifically the residential property tax and rates on commercial property.

The question of a comprehensive property tax is not under consideration by the Government at this time.
